Synopsis

Venice, on the eve of the battle of Custoza. Countess Livia Serpieri, married to a pro-Austrian aristocrat, is secretly sided with the Italian patriots. The meeting with a young Austrian officer, Franz Mahler, is fatal to her: love makes her blind to the machinations of the man, who only tries to extort money from her to buy his exemption from military service. She does not hesitate to give him what the Italian patriots have entrusted to her for the war expenses and Franz, having obtained what he wanted, disappears from her life. But Livia sets out on his trail, determined to confront him.
