Presentation

This monument is the symbol of the city and it owes its name to the Latin toponym indicating the sand that used to cover the stalls. The Arena was built in the first half of the 1st century A.D. with white and pink limestone quarried from the Verona province area; it is one of the best preserved surviving Roman amphitheatres. Only a small portion of the outer ring is left, the so-called ?Wing?, of four spans, whereas the inner ring is intact with its double order of seventy-two stone arcades forming an ellipse of about 140x110 metres, and fourty-four tiers of marble seats. Since 1913 the Arena has become the most important lyric open-theatre in the world.
