Castello Inferiore di Marostica

Castles, villas, palaces

The Lower Castle of Marostica (VI), erected starting in 1312 in what is now Castle Square, consists of the keep and the structure that develops behind it forming a crenellated wall enclosure. The keep, in particular, is 10 meters wide and 34 meters high, divided into 7 internal floors connected by 126 steps. Two drawbridges, placed on the north and south sides of the facades, allow crossing a large moat. The court of arms, on the ground floor, is surrounded by double brick colonnades, has frescoes on the walls, and in the center is a 15th-century Asiago stone well. On the upper floor, the loggia, decorated with 17th-century frescoes, gives access to the historical rooms and the exhibition of costumes made for the biennial living-character chess game that made the city world famous.
