Castello Papadopoli Giol

Castles, villas, palaces

Castello Papadopoli Giol is a splendid stately home with ancient origins built in the English neo-Gothic style better known as Tudor. In 1192, the Patriarchs had a fortress built here for defence purposes. Subsequent renovation includes some very fine work by Da Tolentino and by the Papadopoli Counts. The latter totally renovated the castle in 1850 and further expanded in 1888. With its tall crenelated towers, bow windows, chimneys disguised as pinnacles and arched mullioned windows, this majestic building looks exactly like a real medieval English castle. Even more surprising is its huge historic estate: an oasis of 12 hectares that still today preserves all its original beauty intact. Surrounded by secular trees, copses and vast lawns, the castle even overlooks a wonderful lake with two islands that can be reached by boat or even on foot. The estate also includes the oldest wine cellar in Italy, documented as already existing in 1427.
