Presentation

This imposing 1st Century Roman Gate was the main entrance to the city along the main decumanus (Decumanus Maximus). Built in local white limestone, it shows features of the first Empire style, and is composed of three levels, with two round arches at the first floor and arched windows in the upper part. The ancient name of the Gate was Porta Iovia, due to its proximity to a temple dedicated to Jupiter. The name "Borsari" dates back to the Middle-Ages for the presence of "bursarii" used to collect tolls here.
