Presentation

The Prato della Valle, one of the symbols of Padua, is one of the largest elliptical squares in Europe (88,620 square meters), second only to Moscow's Red Square. The large monumental space consists of a central green island, called Memmia Island in honor of Andrea Memmo who commissioned the work, surrounded by a canal adorned by a double base of statues of famous people of the past, which according to the original plan were to be 88. Today we can admire 78 statues with 8 pedestals surmounted by obelisks and 2 voids, representing the city's most illustrious sons, Paduans by birth or adoption, professors and students who honored the city and Paduan study. Four avenues cross the Lawn on small bridges, then meet at the center of the islet.
