Teatro Olimpico

Theaters and cinemas

The Teatro Olimpico, one of Vicenza's artistic wonders, is located inside the Palazzo del Territorio in Piazza Matteotti, at the eastern end of Corso Palladio. Inside, which seats about 400 people, prose and music reviews, concerts and private events are held. The theater was built in 1580 on a commission from the Accademia Olimpica and is the oldest covered, masonry theater in the world. Andrea Palladio's design was inspired by the Roman theaters described by Vitruvius: a stepped cavea of elliptical shape surrounded by a colonnade with statues on the frieze, facing a rectangular stage and a majestic proscenium on two architectural orders, opened by three arches and punctuated by half-columns, inside which are aedicules and niches with statues and panels with bas-reliefs. The opulent interiors are made of poor materials in wood, stucco and plaster.
