The tower was begun in the 12th century in Romanesque style that was typical of that time (still visibile today in the lower part), and made of alternating tuff and bricks. When the octagonal belfry above the three-light windows was added in 1464, the tower reached the height of eighty-four metres thus becoming the tallest tower in Verona. The clock was added in the 18th century and is still working today.
