Villa Barbaro di Maser

Castles, villas, palaces

The construction of Villa Barbaro di Maser (TV), the country residence of the brothers Marcantonio and Daniele Barbaro, members of the Venetian aristocracy, was entrusted in the mid-sixteenth century to the great architect Andrea Palladio. Palladio adapted his design to the landscape context: the axial development of the residence and barchesse is compact and proportionate, and the profile of the architecture harmoniously echoes the undulating rhythm of the hills behind. The central body, intended as a manor house, has a facade inspired by a classical building. However, the lintel and pediment are interrupted by a plastic decoration in stucco, which frames and enhances the Barbaro family coat of arms. The garden, once rich with flower beds and fountains, slopes down to the road, beyond which a wide exedra leads into the vast countryside.
