On the hilltop Montecchia, part of the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills, 40 Km West of Venice, 10 Km from Padua and 20 from Vicenza, stands the Villa Emo Capodilista, a masterpiece of Italian architecture and one of the most original amongst the Venetian Villas. The Villa, from the day of its conception, has always belong to the same family. The works for the construction of Villa Emo Capodilista, originally an hunting lodge, began in 1568 commissioned by Gabriele Capodilista invested with the fief of Montecchia. The project by Dario Varotari (Verona 1539 - Padua 1596) architect and painter, pupil of Veronese, is based on a square plan that is repeated in the internal distribution of the rooms. : four on the ground floor and four on the first floor, connected by a splendid staircase composed of four flights in the Greek cross-formation. The Villa has been the set of "The Merchant of Venice" starring Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, in the movie called Casa di Porzia.
