At the Multisala Rossini in Venice, four meetings will explore the present and future of film criticism in an era marked by artificial intelligence, media proliferation, and the redefinition of knowledge. After exploring the history of film festivals through the stories of their protagonists in the first two editions, White Paper now broadens its horizons to contemporary cinephile cultures, proposing a new cycle of dialogues and screenings in which some of the most authoritative Italian critics – Alberto Crespi, Marco Giusti, Cristina Piccino, and Paolo Mereghetti – reflect on the meaning of their profession today: between writing and algorithms, between the memory of the theater and digital platforms, in a landscape where the culture of taste (and the taste for culture) seem increasingly difficult to cultivate.
Each meeting is introduced and moderated by the curators Marco Dalla Gassa (Ca' Foscari University of Venice) and Carmelo Marabello (IUAV University of Venice – VIU Venice International University), and is followed by the screening of a film selected and commented on by the guest. Through the films of Bernardo Bertolucci, David Lynch, Claire Simon, and Louis Garrel, the series covers a wide range of expressive possibilities, where auteur and genre films, comedy and drama, fiction and documentary challenge the solidity of critical paradigms and the habits of spectatorship.
The initiative is part of Ca' Foscari University of Venice's Public Engagement 2025 projects and is organized in collaboration with Iuav University of Venice, Venice International University, the Veneto Film Commission, and the Cinema Circuit of the Municipality of Venice.
